Deputy Commissioner Kristy Rigby
Kristy joined the Utah Department of Public Safety’s Highway Safety Office in 1994 while earning a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Utah in Community Health Education. She began her career as Child Passenger Safety Program Coordinator and worked to bring the first child safety seat trainings into the state. For sixteen years she managed Utah’s Occupant Protection Program, and has been an integral part of the state’s child passenger safety, drowsy driving, teen driving, distracted driving, community traffic safety, and Zero Fatalities programs.
In December of 2014, she accepted the position of Director for the Utah Highway Safety Office and led a team of 15 for nearly four years, challenging each one to look at innovative programs and improved data-driven countermeasures aimed at decreasing the number of fatalities and
injuries occurring on Utah’s roadways. In October 2018, Kristy was asked to serve as Deputy Commissioner for the Department and has brought her experience, commitment, and passion to this position.
In addition to her work with state and local programs, she is an active member of various National groups and committees. She participates in the national Transportation Research Board and is a member of the Standing Committee on Transportation Safety Management (ANB10). She also participates as a panel member with the National Cooperative Highway Safety Research Program (NCHRP) and has served on several Governor’s Highway Safety Association committees. In addition, she is a member of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Occupant Protection Program assessment team.
Kristy has received recognition for her work to improve public and traffic safety in Utah, including: Governor’s Medal of Excellence in Outstanding Public Service, Public Safety Distinguished Service Medal, Public Safety Medal of Excellence, Catherine Summerhays Award from the Health Education Association of Utah, Special Act/Special Service Award for her dedication to child passenger safety on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation, and an Appreciation and Recognition Award from the Utah Minority Community Information and Education Center.
Kristy grew up and resides in Salt Lake County where she is raising a daughter and son, Maya and Isaak, with her husband Alan.
